This month on Soul to Soul Partnership, we’re talking about Freedom. October was about Expansion and seeing more of who we are, while November looked at how we can grow and become more of who we are. So how does Freedom lead on from both of those themes? To quote The Doors’ frontman Jim Morrison:
The most important kind of freedom is to be what you really are. It’s got to happen inside first.
And it does. External freedom is hugely important in how we live our lives. The freedom to express ourselves without fear of arrest, the freedom to live where we want to live and how we want to live without fear of a government taking it all away, the freedom to love who we choose without fear of attack. All of these freedoms contribute to our wellbeing and emotional balance.
However, external freedom is conditional, it’s dependent on systems and countries and other people. It can be both given and taken away.
The only freedom that can’t be taken away is inner freedom. Being who you truly are without needing anyone’s approval or permission is freedom. Accepting yourself unconditionally - warts and all - is freedom. Making mistakes without self-judgment or self-criticism is freedom. And the key to inner freedom?
Throughout December we’ll be looking at how acceptance and freedom are intertwined. Plus how they are possibly the two greatest gifts we can give ourselves this Holiday Season!
